Lullaby

You are my sunshine

https://youtu.be/ndT9U9BN9o4

My only sunshine

You make me happy

When skies are grey

You’ll never know dear

How much I love you

Please don’t take my sunshine away

Tu es mon rayon de soleil, mon seul rayon de soleil

Tu me rends heureux quand les cieux sont gris

Vous ne saurez jamais ma chère, combien Je vous aime

S'il vous plaît ne me prenez pas mon rayon de soleil

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

Chapter 2 Assignment Charlotte Gregory

Learning Goal

My learning goal for this unit would to be to introduce lullaby’s students may not heard before or know about.  These lullabies are very soothing and peaceful for young children to hear and will hopefully have that effect on students who may be more energetic in the class.  Being able to calm down from the result of a lullaby will teach students about managing emotions not only in the classroom.  I would like the lessons to range in difficulty starting with the simplest and building my way up.  I want students to have the goal to complete the songs and be able to sing them without teacher assistance.  Another goal is to pass down knowledge from cultures that may not be familiar and display diversity when it comes to different ways of life for different children.

Lesson #1 You are my Sunshine Charlotte Gregory

  1. Begin class by singing piece to the students ask is anyone knows the piece and if so, join in if you’re able

  2. Give some background of the piece and its larger work, who sings it

  • Written by Jimmy David and Charles Mitchell

  1. Call and response learning

  • I will sing the song in full 3 times

  • Then work with one bar at a time memorization

  • 4 groups of 2 lines

  1. Stand if you are able add movements and come up with some actions as a group that are simple representing some words once call and response is solidified

  • I will introduce the ASL actions without letting students know they are learning ASL

  • That will flow into next week’s lesson

  1. Asking students to pair up and sing for each other, one half sings other half sings, forming unity with each other. Ask why you think I want you to do this

  • Sing it as if you are trying to make a baby fall asleep

  1. Hopefully pairing with someone they haven’t been paired up with before

You are my sunshine

My only sunshine

You make me happy, when skies are grey

You’ll never know dear

How much I love you

Please don’t take my sunshine away

Lesson Plan #2

  1. Review song from last week

  2. Start by singing the song with ASL and singing the lyrics to start reflecting on the correlation of words and the song from last lesson

  • Do we remember the hand gestures from last week?

  1. Solidify song lyrics

  2. Starting with an introduction to ASL with a video of the ASL alphabet for a bit of background

  3. Hopefully being able to collaborate with someone who is fluent in ASL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_gXiBe9y9A

  1. Why might learning some words of ASL assist you in the future of learning and where might it be used

  • Ask class to talk to a partner about this

  • Do we know anyone who uses ASL?

  1. While performing the lullaby give students time to process hand gestures taking it very slow

  2. Giving certain words such as sunshine and allowing students to memorize the actions for this word to be able to apply later to singing the lullaby

  3. How might the gesture relate to the word e.g., Grey or I love you

  4. Perform piece singing and using ASL with class and lastly put everything together without singing lyrics

  5. Be able to sing the whole piece only ASL and keep the silence in the room

Lesson Plan #3 Jen Yang Little Swallow

  1. Starting with singing the lullaby to the class multiple times with the words on the board for students to follow along with and show translation

  • Introduce song and translation being shown on the board

  • Importance of stories being told through generations and different experiences

  • Call and response

  • Sing the piece 3+ times

  1. Learning some background on the piece what does it mean where did it originate why are we learning it?

  • Northern China

  • Swallows flying home for the spring

  • Showing students on the map where this is

  1. Speaking the lyrics with the students before adding melody repeat as many times as needed

  2. Asking students what is a swallow and what do they look like show me?

  3. Come up with actions for the song in a group of 3

  • Perform for the class

  1. Learning tune with the class come up with a hand gesture for the little swallow to be able to use while singing the lullaby in full

  2. Call and response while learning the tune incorporating hand gesture

  3. Have students sing the whole song as they are able with swallow gesture
